This production represents best-practices learned the hard way in field production: listen during the interview to plan B-roll; shoot more than you'll need and the editor will thank you; always have a plan B; shoot first then write and write and write.
As a team, pre-production was rushed. We settled on the theme that there must be some place on the planet hotter than Phoenix. Our naivety led us to a group of leadership students from Africa. We were wrong. In the process, we made new friends, hurdled production obstacles and managed interesting group dynamics.
This reminded me of a good friend and production manager at a film festival where I have volunteered for more than 2 decades. His mantra is: "no one here is getting paid enough to have a bad time."
Special thanks to our new friends who were generous with their time and impressions of the scorching Phoenix heat.
Kudos to Cynthia for a bold idea.
And here's a shout out to Dave Cornelius who always says "the best camera is the one you've got with you."
