Opinion Writing vs. Editorial

Thanks Alan, for all of the great information about opinion writing.

The slides breakdown the differences between editorials, opinions, and columns into basic terms. They will be incredibly helpful when presenting the material to my students.

The explanation of the different types of editorial and what audience type is addresses is going to be a big help to me. Several students at Harding Fine Arts Academy have expressed their desires for  changes in the cafeteria food, which has never been addressed through news articles. The main reason for this is that their approach seemed to be argumentative and did not provide a viable solution. I am looking forward to approaching the subjects with them again with criticism editorial in mind. At the same time, the persuasion editorial could be used to effectively implement the privilege to leave campus for lunch.

Of course, every year in April the entire city is reminded of the anniversary Murrow Building through the local media. However, this event took place before our students were born. To do a remembrance editorial from the viewpoint of a teenager could enhance the students's understanding of the event and make it more meaningful.

I am also a big believer in students' response to praise, and plan to approach the staff about looking for opportunities to report on outstanding moments throughout the year.

Thanks again for all of this information. My staff's skills and The Beat will be so much better as a result of it.
