Sometimes you just need to get out of your comfort zone. I have to admit some of my colleagues can’t believe I wanted to do professional development during my summer vacation. There are times when trying new things this week made me uneasy and uncomfortable.
Making
the video was definitely a test. Being thrown into a group of people you don’t
know with everyone having their own ideas on what to do. Not to mention lugging
heavy equipment around in 103* temperature, not knowing where you are or where
you are going .Toss in trying to get it all done under a deadline, was
frustrating.
Listening
to David Biscobing from ABC TV 15 was intriguing. Risking his life to
undercover wrongdoings. The persistence of keeping with a story knowing the
impact it may have on others. Knowing it
will be worth the price.
Dan
Gillmor showed us about digital media and made me think about this technology age
we entered was mind boggling. “And, not or” made me really think about this changing
field with multimedia in the digital age.
Kristin
Gilger threw in a lesson on difficult conversations. The scenarios and mock situations are good practice for the real life situations. Those difficult conversations will come up,
and being prepared on how to address it is something to contemplate.
Tonight
was movie night and our movie turned out pretty good. I have to say, being out
of the comfort zone was tough at times, but that’s how you learn. Making the movie
was totally foreign to me. But working with Krystin really helped. It didn’t matter that she is the same age as
my daughter. She kept plugging away at the sound bites and movie clips like a
pro. Sure, it was frustrating at times but she didn’t give up. Krystin even
taught me a few things along the way.
All
of this experience pulled me out of my comfort zone. But, isn’t that when we
learn? And, with time and practice it will all become easier.

Working in my group was challenging! I think that most of you asked out of concern. Thank you. I want to go on record to let everyone know that it was a learning experience. Working in a group that provides challenges demonstrates what our students feel when confronted with the same issues. What should be done is almost like a buffering process. What would have made me feel more comfortable is if my group could have maturely talked about our concerns and worked toward the middle. Bottom line, we didn't die, and the project was finished.
ReplyDeleteShelley, I agree. Making the video vignette took me waaaay out of my comfort zone. However, I loved my group, and I loved running around (read that riding around in a rickshaw) shooting video and interviewing our source. I'm still not all that comfortable with Premier and I've forgotten most of the tools we were shown, but I think I could figure it out again if I had to, say if I wanted to help my students edit a video vignette.
