Yew-tahhhh, not Utah

This year-my first year teaching-has taught me quite a bit. I survived a full load of English, Journalism, and PM English. But I need more.

What I hope to take from this institute:

1. Dirty hands - I feel like a professional as a teacher, but I lack the working knowledge of Journalism that would afford me the sense of journalistic professionalism that would help me engage my students better.

2. Community - Nothing has proven to be more helpful to me as a first year teacher than other teachers who have struggled through the same circumstances and found meaningful solutions, and who are willing to share. I have had that link for English, but I have not had the same luxury for journalism (except for the occasional fb post comment or cup of coffee with Steffi - who will also be at the institute).

3. A better-educated echo - I have ideas, some good, some bad. The problem is, I have spent too much time bouncing them off of walls, and not off of people who would help me hone, or ditch them.

4. To be a student - We have all been the proverbial teacher-student all year, "I have learned so much from my students." I want to be a literal student. I look forward to soaking in someone else's lesson for a change. I look forward to working the learning side of my brain that has been beaten to submission from the planning side of my brain.

  1. Welcome. You're coming to the right place, Kristen. These priorities line up with our goals pretty much in every way, including order.

  2. It sounds like you've had quite the initiation into teaching. I teach at Roy High and so that makes us neighbors. I'm looking forward to getting to know you.

  3. I too am your neighbor, although distant, I teach at Kearns High School. I must say that I am a little intimidated as I have no experience in this area, and it seems like a lot of other people who are going are experts in the field. However, It is nice to know that I will be in the company of people from my own state

  4. Kathryn, we are closer neighbors. I'm at Taylorsville High. I know Kristen from student teaching and Terry, I used to live in Roy and am at least vaguely familiar with Roy High from some lesson observation. So excited to see so many awesome Utah teachers here, I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone!
